Koinobori by Elisa Schoemehl

Through symbolism, Elisa Schoemehl combines the parent’s and child’s perspective while growing up. Koinobori displays elements of struggle, hope, and fantasy; all of which are emotions emblematic of childhood.

“Based on a Koinobori, a Japanese kite shaped like a fish, it symbolizes the wish for parents to want their kids to grow up healthy and with good spirits. This fantastical interpretation is meant to invoke nostalgia. When you look closer, you notice that the kite is crying, flying through an abyss. The pressure of growing up and trying to be the perfect child is reflected in the kite's tears, hidden by a cloak of magnificence.” - Elisa Schoemehl
